The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology started the new academic year with three professional activities:

  • On September 28, and in collaboration with the Makarios Children’s Hospital, the Cyprus Gynaecological Society, the Cyprus Society of Perinatal Medicine and the Cyprus Nurses’ and Midwives’ Association it organised a clinical seminar on “Labour Ward Emergencies” at Makarios Hospital attended by 62 health professionals including 16 obstetricians, 24 midwives and 22 medical students. The programme included two presentations by students.  Jessica Mary Vickers presented ‘Abnormal Cardiotocographic Traces’ and Carlos Saber, Jirayr Ajzajian and Elissa Abi Raad talked about ‘Postpartum Haemorrhage Management’.

  • On September 29 and 30 the Essential Life Support in Obstetrics (ELSO) course was organised, for the first time in Cyprus, in collaboration with the Hellenic Society of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Emergency. 23 medical students were trained and certified as Basic Life Support in Obstetrics (BLSO) providers.
  • In addition, the Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO) course was also run on the same days where 24 health professionals were trained and accredited as ALSO providers. This is the second time that the Medical School has hosted an ALSO course.
  •

The Founding Chair of the Department Professor Sir Sabaratnam Arulkumaran, together with the Curriculum Lead for OBGYN, Prof Kalakoutis, and the Clinical Lead at Makarios Hospital, Dr Argyrides, have been the driving force behind these activities.
