The Medical School recently donated €1,315.85 to the International Humanitarian Aid Mother of God (IHAMG) to support the operation of a clinic in Burundi. The amount was raised during a series of events organised on campus by students in the past academic year.

Archimandrite Anastasios Pogiatzis received the cheque on behalf of IHAMG during the White Coat Ceremony and in the presence of Metropolitan of Burundi and Rwanda Innocentios Byakatonda.  Archimandrite Anastasios, who is a General Practitioner and Honorary Professor of Tropical Medicine at the Medical School, specialises in adapting medical practice to poor rural areas with limited resources and devotes much of his life to medical missions in Africa (Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Madagascar, and recently Burundi and Rwanda).

The University of Nicosia helps IHAMG in its efforts to organise and strengthen medical missions in Africa. Three years ago, the Medical School furnished the office and the laboratory of a clinic in Madagascar.  In 2012, and on an annual basis, the School delivers the Annual Lecture on Tropical Medicine where medical students and clinical faculty learn about opportunities to assist medical missions in Africa.
