According to Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2021.

The University of Nicosia (UNIC) has been named among the top 801-1000 universities in the world, according to the latest edition of the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings. The THE World University Rankings (WUR) are possibly the best-known university rankings in the world. The expanded WUR 2021 edition includes over 1,500 ranked research-intensive universities, out of 25,000 universities globally, that met the THE eligibility criteria and applied for assessment.

“Inclusion in the Top 1000 THE table is a truly remarkable achievement, as we essentially now join the top 4% of universities worldwide. This honour is a strong endorsement of the overall quality of our University, of the high-quality education we offer, and the culmination of our dedicated and pioneering efforts. We are delighted and honoured to provide prospective students from Cyprus, Greece, the rest of Europe and beyond, the opportunity to study on campus and online at one of the best universities in the world”, noted Professor Philippos Pouyioutas, Rector of the University of Nicosia.

One of the core areas in which the University excelled is International Outlook, where UNIC ranked 76th worldwide.

“Achieving this outstanding position is a testament to our innovative internationalisation strategy and especially to our notable success in offering cross-border education. Our pioneering work in Distance Learning Education and our joint ventures with other prestigious universities in offering high-quality joint and collaborative degrees and carrying out state-of-the-art research has been the backbone of this strategy”, he continued.

Continuing along these lines, Professor Dimitris Drikakis, Vice President of Global Partnerships, noted:

“Our continued rise in international rankings shows that the University of Nicosia has been on an upward trajectory in the global Higher Education sector. The Times Higher Education ranking is a recognition of our achievements in research, as well as the exceptional quality of our teaching”.

This latest distinction comes in the wake of the University’s 5-Star Institutional Rating by the QS Intelligence Unit in its 2020 audit, along with only 50 other universities globally. It also expands upon UNIC’s most recent ranking achievements in both the QS World University Rankings (number 106 in Emerging Europe and Central Asia Region) and the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings (number 42 in the world in the core area of Quality Education). The latter are the first to measure the success of universities in delivering the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Rector Pouyioutas underlined the overall significance of the achievement, noting that

“it represents a historic milestone in our continuing journey, which has seen our University go from strength to strength in the past few years, while emphatically reinforcing the role of the Republic of Cyprus as a global education hub”.

He concluded by referring to the people that have been instrumental in this success:

“I would like to wholeheartedly thank the entire University community, namely, the teaching, research, and administrative personnel, as well as our students and alumni, who are the driving force behind UNIC’s continued achievements and growing international reputation”.
