May 2021

In coordination and association with the Ministry of Health, the University of Nicosia Medical School and Medical Centre have volunteered their expertise in the fight against COVID-19. Special groups who do not qualify for the vaccination programme under GESY, the general healthcare system, like the United Nations Force and third country nationals, can now get their vaccinations at the Medical Centre.

To support these groups, a joint volunteer effort is taking place throughout May and June 2021, to provide additional vaccines for thousands of the island’s residents. Physicians, faculty and staff volunteers who are affiliated with the Medical School and the Medical Centre, are working on Saturdays to deliver vaccinations for the greater protection of the population and public health.

Dr Anastasis Sioftanos, Director of the Medical Centre and Clinical Assistant Professor of General Practice at the Medical School commented, “We are all working towards a safer future and the quicker people get vaccinated, the quicker we can redefine normal. These remarkable efforts to vaccinate from so many collaborators prove what we can achieve together.”

The Medical Centre will provide the second round of vaccinations for these special groups from August into September 2021. The Centre also provides GESY member vaccinations for patients that have selected a General Practitioner (GP) within the Centre as well as those whose GP is not participating in vaccinations. For more information, please visit the Centre website – https://www.unic.ac.cy/medicalcentre/ to register for an appointment or book an online telehealth video appointment.

The goal to support the Cyprus vaccination programme was to increase capacity and availability as well as to expand services during a global emergency. We wish to offer a sincere thank you to all of those volunteer clinicians, faculty and staff that have provided their expertise, time and service to better protect the population.
