Endoscopic Skull Base Dissection Course

From 1-3 October 2021, the Medical School, in collaboration with the Leiden University Medical Center and Hygeia Hospital in Greece organised in Athens an endoscopic skull base dissection course which included hands on dissection, lectures and a mini symposium. Head of the Head and Neck Clinic at Hygeia Hospital commented ‘The emergence of Covid – 19 pandemic resulted in a long hiatus in dissection courses worldwide over the last two years. Hence, the re-appearance of dissection courses signifies a ‘relative’ return to normality.

After seven years in Amsterdam and Leiden, the 2021 Endoscopic Skull Base Dissection Course, moved to Athens, Greece – same faculty, same feeling, slightly better weather! Three days of high-quality lectures and hands-on skull base dissection demonstrations from Paolo Castelnuovo, Davide Locatelli, Shahz Ahmed, Isam Alobid, Cem Meco, Iacopo Dallan, Diego Mazzatenta, Ricardo Carrau and Daniel Prevedello (via zoom), more than 60 eager and enthusiastic otolaryngologists and neurosurgeons from more than 10 countries made this course a success. Well-equipped stations with neuronavigational systems, high speed drills and suctions simulated perfectly an operation room setup. But there was something more than cadaveric dissections and anatomy lectures. One of the most important goals of the course had been met: Co-operation between specialties is the only way one can safely treat pathologies that a few years ago, were considered inaccessible.
