The Medical School will participate with its own kiosk at the Researcher’s Night 2018 event to be held at the Lanitis Carob Mill Complex in Limassol on the 28th of September 2018 from 4pm to midnight.  The event is open to the public. Visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy a creative night-time event dedicated to science and research, through experiments, games, competitions and music.  More specifically, in each stand researchers will present their work and inform the public about the role and importance of research in the modern world as well as the practical applications of their research results in everyday life. At the same time, participants will have the opportunity to engage in hands-on experiments and become researchers for one night.

The Medical School’s kiosk is titled ‘Become a surgeon for the night!’  Activities include:

  • Watch how to tie a surgical knot through our 3D virtual reality video and then try out your skills in tying a surgical knot!
  • Learn about the history of surgery in Cyprus from photographs of ancient medical and surgical instruments discovered in excavations all over the island.
  • Watch how a surgical eye operation is conducted, chat to ophthalmologists and medical students and discover with your hands the anatomy of the eye.
  • Test your knowledge and try your luck at the “Wheel of Surgery” – get the right answer and win!
  • Browse various human anatomy models and learn how the human body works.
  • Dress like a doctor and take a photo with a team of surgeons in the operation theatre.

The event is organized by the Research Promotion Foundation (RPF) in collaboration with academic and research institutions as well as other organisations in Cyprus. It is an initiative of the European Commission and takes place simultaneously in almost all European countries.  The event in Cyprus is funded by the European Commission under the “Horizon 2020” Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions.
