The role of empathy in treatment has become increasingly important in recent years. Empathy-enhancing practices have been shown to make therapy more effective, increase patient satisfaction and well-being, and reduce doctors’ risk of malpractice and burnout.

The scope of the course ‘Empathic and assertive communication in clinical practice’, which is offered by the University of Pécs, Medical School aims to enhance empathic and assertive communication skills. During the practices, the psychological and linguistic background provides excellent professional assistance to the students to manage even the most difficult and stressful situations with confidence and resolve conflicts and problems in doctor-patient situations with appropriate empathy and assertiveness.

With established theoretical background we aim to share methods and creative ideas for improving medical students’ interpersonal skills in doctor-patient, and doctor-relative conversations. Expectations, challenges and successful performances of the students confirm our dedication and belief; empathy and assertive communication can be significantly improved with awareness raising and practising in a safe environment.
