CROSS BORDERS BETWEEN ANATOMY AND PARASITOLOGY: THE BENEFITS

By Professor Panagiotis Karanis
Medical Faculty of Cologne University, Anatomy Center, Cologne, Germany

Anatomy is the basis of any knowledge. Without knowing the anatomy of something, in the sense of its basic structure, it is difficult to understand the complex whole. In the medical field, anatomy forms the basis of medical and scientific knowledge. In this context, anatomy concerns the construction of body parts, and the art of dissecting and describing the constituent parts of a human being,
an animal or a plant in order to study the structure, location and relationship between its various components. Without anatomical knowledge, an assessment of the nature, impact and location of a disorder or disease is impossible and, equally, the performance
of surgical procedures is impossible. It is not surprising, therefore, and indeed it is rather common, that anatomists not only dissect and analyse bodies, but they also make major discoveries in other disciplines including infectious diseases.
My professional interests combine two passions: anatomy and parasitology. This lecture will give you an insight into my two decades of experience in teaching anatomy, and three decades of experience in teaching and research in the field of infectious diseases.
