Dr Philippou is an Assistant Professor in Nutrition-Dietetics at the University of Nicosia, Cyprus and a Visiting Lecturer in Nutrition-Dietetics at King’s College London. She holds a BSc degree in Nutrition (2001, King’s College London, First Class Honors), a PgDip in Dietetics (2003, King’s College London, Distinction) and a PhD in Dietetics (2008, Imperial College London). She is also a Fellow of the UK’s Higher Educational Academy. Her research interests focus on the role of diet in chronic degenerative disease prevention and specifically the role of glycaemic index and the Mediterranean diet on cardiovascular disease, diabetes and dementia.
Dr Philippou is the editor of a book recently published by CRC Press (2017, New York, USA), titled ‘The Glycemic Index: Applications in Practice’ where she has also co-authored two chapters. The book has gathered together, in an unbiased and critical way, all the evidence and research on GI and is accredited by the contribution of pioneers in the field from research centres in Canada, USA, Australia and Europe. Additionally, Dr Philippou has published a number of research papers in high impact journals including the USA’s Nutrition Society ‘Advances in Nutrition’ (IF:4.7), the ‘European Journal of Clinical Nutrition’, ‘Obesity’, ‘Metabolism’, ‘Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics’, ‘BMC Public Health’ and ‘American Journal of Gastroenterology’.
Dr Philippou has successfully coordinated the 5-day Grundtvig workshop titled ‘Understanding Nutritional Recommendations’ with the participation of 20 European adults funded by the EU Life Long Learning Programme funding. The project received an award for its excellent content and organisation by the Life Long Learning Agency. Dr Philippou also coordinated the research project: ‘The impact of a nutritional workshop on adherence to the Mediterranean diet in adolescent competitive swimmers’ funded by the University of Nicosia, the findings of which have been published in the Journal of Sports Medicine Australia ‘Journal of Science & Medicine in Sport’.
Currently, Dr Philippou has been granted permission to investigate the role of the dietary glycaemic index on cognition on the 1946 birth cohort of the University of London’s Medical Research Council Unit for Lifelong Health and Ageing. Initial findings from this project have already been presented by Dr Philippou in the UK’s Nutrition Society (12/2016). Dr Philippou is also currently the primary investigator of the validation of a food frequency questionnaire developed for the investigation of the diet of Cypriot adults, a project undertaken in collaboration with the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics.
In addition to her research activities, Dr Philippou teaches a number of nutrition and dietetics courses at BSc and MSc level including Public Health Nutrition, Contemporary Issues in Food and Nutrition, Food and Nutrition Policy, Medical Nutrition Therapy and Clinical Practice Placements. She also teaches the Nutrition topics to the Medical Programme of the St’ George’s Medical School delivered by the University of Nicosia. Additionally, since 2007, she has a private practice as a clinical dietitian consulting patients including people with cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity and other conditions.
