Maria Kanaki is an Academic Associate at the University of Nicosia Medical School.
Ms Kanaki holds an LL.B, and Postgraduate Degree in Bioethics from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. The Title of her post-graduate Dissertation was: “Legal Issues arising during the drawing up of a Testament in Patients with Dementia”.
Maria Kanaki has been working as an active Lawyer for the last eight years, immediately after she obtained her License to practice in 2010 and she has been since then also Member of the Bar Association of Thessaloniki.
Recently, she has participated actively in the writing of a Project-Proposal, as a member of a multidisciplinary Research-Team. The Subject of the submitted Project-Proposal was the following: “Reform of Greek adult Protection Law: Promoting Autonomy of Mentally Disabled Elderly”.
Furthermore, she has already published a couple of scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals (e.g. “Living Wills and Advanced Directives” in the official Journal of the Medical Corp of Evros, “Testamentary Capacity of Patients with Dementia and the Role of Law Courts in such Cases” in the Supplementary Issue in the Hellenic Journal of Nuclear Medicine [The Official Journal of the Hellenic Society of Nuclear Medicine], “Basic Principles of Medical Practice in the Hippocratic Era and Today” in the Journal Encephalos” (Archives of Neurology and Psychiatry)]. She has also participated as a Speaker in the 10th Panhellenic Conference on Alzheimer’s disease (PICAD) & 2nd Mediterranean Conference on Neurodegenerative Diseases (MeCoND), the Title of her Speech was “Legal Issues arising during the drawing up of a Testament in Patients with Dementia and the current Law regarding their Validity”.
Currently she is working on her doctoral dissertation, the subject of which is from the field of Bioethics where also her research interests are focused.
