Keynote Lecture: Inherited Retinal Degeneration Testing – Where are we now?

Pantheo Foundation and the University of Nicosia Medical School invite you to the Pantheo Foundation Keynote Lecture entitled “Inherited Retinal Degeneration Testing – Where are we now?”  by Professor Susan Downes, MB ChB, MD, FRCOphth.

Professor Susan Downes has been a Consultant at the Oxford Eye Hospital, Oxford University Hospitals University Foundation Trust since 2000, having completed post-residency clinical and research fellowships in Medical Retina at Moorfields Eye Hospital, during which she obtained a higher degree (MD, 2000) in inherited retinal degeneration (IRD) at the Institute of Ophthalmology, UCL, and Moorfields Eye Hospital. She is Lead for the AMD and IRD services and was awarded a gold medal by the Oxford University Hospitals Foundation NHS Trust for outstanding achievement (2014). She is the Ophthalmology Clinical Research Network Lead for Thames Valley and South Midlands representing them nationally. Her main research interests include inherited retinal dystrophies and macular disease with significant collaborations within the University of Oxford, throughout the UK and internationally. She set up, and is the Clinical Lead for the Eye Research Group Oxford (ERGO), and is Principal Investigator (PI) and co-PI on projects with wide-ranging collaborations in retinal disease.

Professor Downes has over 100 publications, and she has delivered invited national and international presentations. Together with colleagues from Clinical Genetics, the Clinical Genetics Laboratory and the University of Oxford, funded by the Biomedical Science Centre of Excellence, she was involved in the evaluation of next generation sequencing in IRD leading to NHS genetic testing, and the establishment of Oxford as one of three providers in the UK for IRD testing. Together with colleagues, she set up the United Kingdom Eye Genetics Group (UKEGG), and is the Oxford PI for the UK IRD consortium project, and is currently chair of the Medical Advisory Board for Retina UK. Professor Downes has a strong track record in teaching and training, and is currently Lead for Ophthalmology Foundation doctors in the Oxford Deanery, as well as for the fifth-year medical student Ophthalmology programme.
