As medicine races headlong to guideline driven practice with risk avoidance at its heart, I have growing concerns for the patients and doctors of the future. I will draw on over forty years of clinical, educational and research experience, admittedly largely in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, to hopefully demonstrate the good and bad points of that evolution. We cannot and should not stand in the way of progress, but I will show how it must be measured and appropriate. I will also draw on my own experiences to demonstrate some of the pitfalls uncontrolled innovation.
