Breast & Gynaecological Cancer Centres: a success story

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Dr Tanja Volm, UNIC Medical School Academic Lead at Hirlsanden Hospital Group in Zurich, Switzerland, is a German Gynaecologist, Gynaecologic Oncologist and Palliative Care Specialist. She was trained in Germany (Heidelberg and Ulm) and the UK (Oxford) and received her specialist training from the University of Ulm. Dr Volm earned her PhD from the Institute of Human Genetics, Heidelberg University.

Dr Volm developed the clinical and certification standard for Breast Cancer Centres, is a co-author of the first German guideline for breast cancer, and a member of the German consortium for familial breast cancer.

Dr Volm is the CEO of the Hirslanden Institute for Medical Education, which is part of Hirslanden Hospital Group, the biggest private hospital provider in Switzerland. She is also the CEO of EVO Consult Swiss GmbH, a consultancy business for health care, situated in Switzerland, supporting hospitals in creating competence centres, defining their future and building up new structures.

The goal of Breast Cancer Centres is to organise and provide medical and paramedical services to patients with breast cancer. These Centres are highly professional and comprehensive, and are certified externally for their quality management systems.

The first Breast Cancer Centres started in southern Germany in 2002, and today more than 1000 Cancer Centres operate throughout Europe. A recent German study concluded that these Centres, not only improve patients quality of life, but they also increase survival rates.
